Silence has inaugurated its new production plant in Molins de Rei (Barcelona), the first installation in Spain and Europe that exclusively produces electric scooters and its battery packs.
With this milestone, the national electric motorcycle industry is at the forefront of Europe and the company is approaching its goal: to provide solutions for more sustainable mobility.
The inauguration of the new Silence factory was attended by its founder and CEO Carlos Sotelo, the Managing Director of AEDIVE, Arturo Pérez de Lucía, the General Director of Industry of the Government of Catalonia and the CEO of ACCIÓ, Núria Betriu and the Mayor of Molins de Rei, Joan Ramón Casals, who closed the meeting.
This plant features the latest technology innovations and will increase Silence’s production capacity by up to 10,000 annual electric scooters, as well as provide work for about 37 professionals, including engineers, technicians and commercials.
Thus, the leading national company in electric motorcycle sales in Spain, takes a step towards ‘zero emissions mobility’. For its part, the company’s facilities in Esplugues de Llobregat will be dedicated to the development of its R&D+ i (Research + Development + innovation).
“This inauguration marks a new stage for the industry. Silence wants to be the generational relay of the traditional motorcycle brands with an accentuated respect for the environment. We work to introduce an alternative, comfortable and sustainable mobility in cities, where our customers, companies and administrations have already begun to renew their fleets with Silence,”
said Silence CEO Carlos Sotelo to open the event.
The director of AEDIVE (Business Association for the Development and Promotion of the Electric Vehicle in Spain), Arturo Pérez de Lucía, has exposed the situation of the electric vehicle and the arrival of the new Silence factory.
“We are proud to have companies such us Silence in AEDIVE, which has already done its part as an industry link. Now it is the turn of public administrations, companies and citizens to respond to this challenge and bet on the electric mobility of two wheels”.
Núria Betriu, General Director of Industry of the Government of Catalonia and CEO of ACCIÓ, participated in the meeting highlighting that
“inaugurations like today show that the market for electric mobility is advancing in Catalonia and that opportunities are being generated in a priority sector and strategic for the Catalan industry”.
The Mayor of Molins de Rei, Joan Ramón Casals, closed the ceremony by dedicating a few words to the strategic choice of El Pla industrial zone:
“It is excellent news for Molins de Rei to be able to host the Silence production plant. First, this will give work to more than 35 people. Secondly, because it positions us as a suitable place for the growth of businesses with high added value. And finally, because a company with a vocation of internationalization and commitment to electric mobility and sustainability is coming to the town and this means that an extraordinary future awaits.”
Scutum has the participation of Repsol, Caixa Capital Risc and the Center for Industrial Technical Development (CDTI).
A milestone for the national electric motorcycle industry
The new factory responds to the exponential increase in sales of Silence electric scooters. In 2016, the company broke all the records consolidating as the leader of sales in Spain, with a 40% of the market share. Silence closed the year with a 255% increase in sales over 2015, well above the 119.67% growth in the domestic market. The creation of these facilities will allow the company to double the billing in 2017 and will make possible its international expansion.
So far, Silence has been present in more than 14 countries around the world, such as France, Italy, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Portugal, Mexico, Australia or Thaití, among others. A list of countries in continuous extension, which will require a highly qualified workforce, in the manufacturing and development processes at the new production plant.
An unprecedented production plant in Europe
Carlos Sotelo, CEO of Silence, has directed a visit to the facilities to the more than 120 attendees at the inauguration, while explaining the process of production of the vehicles and technical details.
The factory designed with its corporate colours, green and white, resembles a technological laboratory. It has assembly lines and subassemblies and a quality control point with test bench, in which technicians and engineers check that scooters are in perfect condition to circulate and with all the guarantees. In addition, it has an assembly area of battery packs unique in Europe, where they are assembled. Finally, the large showroom overlooking the production hall represents an urban center that allows you to have a real perspective of the Silence scooters on a smart city.
Silence is the only European manufacturer to assemble its own batteries. The BMS (Battery Management System) and all the electronics have been developed by its own team of engineers, which offers the maximum guarantee of quality.
In addition, the new facilities have commercial offices and marketing, a vehicle store and a hermetic battery cell, a parking lot and an outside area for charging electric vehicles.
